Hi Patrick,

there’s a bootstrap problem here. The spell server initially supports only 
English and it will update the available languages only after the first run. 
One workaround would be changing your default locale to English. Then try using 
the spellchecker. This should properly update the available languages. Once 
that is done you can change your locale back to French.

PS Of course that assumes you already have a French language dictionary for 
aspell installed.
