Turgut,
ICANN requires us, as a Registrar, to allow other organizations to
purchase (in bulk) our whois database. This goes for a fee (of course).
You can opt out of being included in this bulk whois database - we're
working hard to convince ICANN that this should be opt IN instead.
As for spamming lists - if you registered a domain with OpenSRS there are
several places that will monitor new domains, extract your contact
information from the whois, and *bam* - you're spammed.
And, if you were already getting spam - well, the list you were on managed
to get into the hands of a domain name seller (hot market these days, no?
*grin*)
