I've had a similar thing happen, in our case the email never showed up...
and until they make provisions in the code to "resubmit" the transfer i.e
the email gets lost you have to wait for it to time out. I don't see why
there isn't an option to "resend" the verification email if for whatever
reason it never makes it to the destination.
Your situation is a bit different, in that your admin contact is really
invalid...
An invalid admin contact needs to be fixed at the "loosing" registry FIRST,
then submitted for transfer... take it from one who knows... you have to
verify the admin address before even thinking about transferring it.

if your contact info is incorrect, put in a contact change and wait for a
tracking number - then fax the nic a fax auth form including the tracking
number. This process can take a few days 5-10 I've found, then once the
whois is updated with the new contact info submit the transfer.
by the time you get this fixed with the loosing registrar your transfer
will have timed out, and should be ready for re submission.

its frustrating, and I had it happen to me so know where you're coming
from... hang in there there is a very specific order of events that needs
to take place before transferring a domain.
