Domains aren't necessarily a money making proposition by themselves.
Gaining a customer base makes it easier to leverage ancillary products to
that market.
Also, just the price does no necessarily speak the whole story.
Contractual obligations can force the end user to keep the domain name
with the same hosting/information for a specified period of time - with no
control over the domain name. You can enforce this by withholdin the
username/password, and levying a fee on those that wish to move their
'service' elsewhere.
Some only offer 'domain parking' - no DNS, no website, no MX for mail,
nada. Just the name - and charge a bit extra for these offerings if
wanted.
That's just the tip of the iceberg. Remember, I'm just a techie ;) I'm
sure some of the S&M folks on this list could provide more insight.
