Hi all,
I have been here in the shadows for a while. I am currently not an
opensrs reseller. Let me tell you why.
There's no real money in it!
register.com and netsol/AOL are going to do everything they can to stomp
out competition. They can afford to sell for under cost (there ARE laws on
this in some places, but what jurisdiction does these transactions fall
under?), for a long time.
Face it, a lot of people are going to use these ultra cheap
registrars. For better or for worse, inexperienced people generally shop
by price.
OpenSRS resellers will survive, and OpenSRS will survive, by being
BETTER. As I never set up to resell, i have been using a reseller of
OpenSRS (domainalchemy) and have had EXCELLENT and PERSONAL service - So
much better than the 'big guys'. I am sure that a lot of other OpenSRS
resellers are as good. THIS is what will convince people to use
OpenSRS resellers - quality of service.
But that's not enough. I suggest doing reselling as a sideline. If you are
an ISP or a web designer or a consultant, it would work well for
you. People would rather spend a few extra bucks and deal with someone
they know and trust. You don't have to be the Best, you just have to not
screw up. Domain names are so important to online businesses that
customers will probably pay $25 if they trust you, rather than $5.99 to
the guy on the corner.
I am not competing with any of you. I want to see OpenSRS and the better
OpenSRS resellers to survive and prosper, because I hate the
oligopoly/monopoly structure that the economy is taking on.
Regards,
Bob Keyes
