An Alabama businessman has filed a class-action lawsuit accusing Network Solutions
Inc. of hoarding Internet domain names that had
legally expired, a charge that one investment bank linked to a drop in the stock price
of its parent company, VeriSign Inc.

Stan Smith, a Birmingham Internet entrepreneur, alleges that Herndon-based Network
Solutions unlawfully restrained trade when it
refused to grant him 28 expired names, his lawyer said. Smith wants to use the names
to expand his online computer-equipment
business.

Alabama lawyer Scott Powell, who represents Smith, said he suspects Network Solutions
is keeping the domain names to auction off at
a later date.

"They have no right to hoard names that should have been returned to the public,"
Powell said. "It's not theirs to auction.".....
