Well, I'm not a finance guy - but....
We didn't get $10 for each of those domain years - there's been transfer
promotions, affiliate rebates, and different registries - these cost us
different amounts, and we generate different revenues for these as a
result. So, I'd say the $8mil figure is a little off base.
Also - you should ask yourself. How many employees does Tucows have?
Salaries for all. What kind of infrastructure must they have in place for
their affiliate network? Consider over 1000 affiliates mirroring off of
12 libraries, then we generate 100+ million page views a month and an ad
system that runs that, a high availability OpenSRS system (that's not one
machine, but a slew), co-location expenses, print ad media, business
cards, cellular phones, trade show presense (that's not a cheapie!).
And lunch to the entire staff every Friday.
It adds up ;)
