I thought this was a problem of the past, but...
Today a client, having just received an automated renewal notice, renewed a
domain name with me. It was processed by the OpenSRS system and pended, and
only when I tried to submit the pending order did I get an error "Order
3006898 (unversed.com) not registered: Registry didn't return a valid
expiration date."
Now, the owner of this domain name received a renewal notice "from me",
courtesy of the automated OpenSRS renewal system. They submitted an order
to renew at OpenSRS through my client scripts, and received no error. They
submitted a payment to me. And now I have to refund their payment and
explain to them that I was mistaken. True, they share a little of the blame
for not remembering they transferred the domain name to Go Daddy Software a
month ago, but I do not like being in this position.
What's the story? Are transferred domain names not being removed from the
OpenSRS database? Are renewal notices still being sent without checking the
current registrar?
I stopped running registrar checks against my RWI list when it was last
announced the problem was fixed. I will start running them again
immediately.
