Possibly a few reasons.
1. Greater stability and wider access for internet users that want websites
with those suffixes.
2. More stable and ready to use email functions.
3. Bring those public domain words into a body that is more accountable
than a private corporation. (Yes, Icann sucks,... so let's revamp/replace
it.)
