Where are you doing the "WHOIS"? If you do a WHOIS at www.opensrs.com
for LOFFS.com (one of my domains), you'll see 5 nameservers. Adding
more nameservers can provide redundancy, in case one or more becomes
unreachable.

NS2 would be accessed automatically if NS1 is unreachable, and
vice-versa.
