You can update the nameserver to point to a different IP... That would 
release your IP. The name doesn't really matter if it's not in use. If you 
ever needed the name again, just re-assign it to a valid IP again. The lame 
delegation shouldn't affect this either. 

I know, it's a workaround and not a solution, but it should do the trick.
