Let me correct you.

The Registrar has to run the whois server which can be queried for all of
the info including the expiration date.  But the definitive database is
with the REGISTRY.  Should the registrar go under the information is still
in the database of our reliable friends at NetSol (cough cough).

It may be possible for registrars that get multi year registrations to
automatically renew domains each year until their pre paid time has run
out, (which would allow them to play with the money and earn interest from
it ...  hmmmm an interesting profit center)  To my knowledge no registrar
is currently doing that.

So it is probable that years would not be lost..
