I started hitting NetSol's rate limiter on their whois server a few
years back so got the source to whois, added a "-b bindaddr" option
then wrote a little perl wrapper that would pick a random IP address
from those that the local machine's using and use that as the argument
to the -b option.  As the machine I run it on uses 32 IP addesses (and
used to use 512!) I've never had a problem since.
