I have recently released (GPL) a complete rewrite
of the GeekTools whois proxy, which I'm calling
WP Whois Proxy (wp.cgi). (geektools have linked to it
on their software.php page)

It is available for download at
     http://grove.ufl.edu/~bro/
(it is also running at that address for testing.)

Features:

- runs as a web app when called from a browser, but
outputs plain text when run on the commandline. web
version generates links to
re-run queries on domain names, ip#s, nic handles, etc
that are returned by the servers, and generates
mailtos for email addresses.

- configurable from a web form with options to
ZapTrash (eliminate copyright disclaimers), log
accesses, impose access limits, etc.

- ZapTrash (function) is a hash that is pretty
easy to edit so you can keep it up to date yourself.

- a checkbox/switch adds a call to abuse.net in
addition to the whois server, and works with ip#s that
resolve to names.

- recursively strip off nth level subdomains until
they resolve. com/net/org are exceptions to this rule
and are automatically stripped down to domain.tld

- menu/switches can accept Chinese/Korean/Japanese
output (default is English/ascii only).

- outputs valid html 4.01 strict + valid CSS

I would appreciate your feedback -- especially if you
find any security holes or problems with it.

regs,
John Bro
