Alternatively, as the problem is one of being potentially sued under German law, transfer the domains to someone who lives outside Germany, who could then offer the domains free of charge to the German company who own the .de domain. I doubt a German lawyer would get far in trying to persue a cross-border action for expenses against someone who wants to give his clients a present.
