However, DNS changes do not take effect at the same time at all root
servers.  Host record changes almost always show up in WHOIS before they
show up in DNS.  The DNS informatin is *always* unavailable for hosts
within domains that have already expired.  And the additional data
source is good to have for sanity checking,

But all of this is entirely aside from my initial question, to which I
have since found an answer.  For example:

 # whois -h whois.pir.org ho\ unhqint1.un.org
