IANAL, but I seem to remember the rational for this had something to do with avoiding the legal definition of "chattel". You may have noticed that the registrars never refer to a customer as buying a domain name. You cannot own it. You may only "register" it.


For reasons that would require explanation by someone who, at the very least, has played a lawyer on TV, that distinction is very important.
