Hi, In case folks didn't notice, they announced results yesterday:
http://www.newswire.ca/releases/August2003/06/c8401.html Good to see the company making some money and doing well. A few weeks ago, a competing registrar was asking my opinion as to what makes a good registrar. Two of my criteria were: #3 Financial stability (one doesn't want the registrar going out of business). and #7 Reasonable pricing (doesn't need to be bottom of the barrel; it's better if they're making a profit, as they're more likely to treat you well as a customer, vs. someone who only paid $6.49 for their domain and is unprofitable). Good to see Tucows scoring well on those points. Everyone's "wish list" is likely going to be different, but in case others were curious, here's the rest of my list: #1 High security (i.e. registrar implements Registrar-Lock. has good internal procedures to reduce chances of domain hijackings; lots of NSI names are stolen, for instance). #2 Toronto jurisdiction (in the event of a UDRP or other legal proceeding, having a registrar be in Toronto, where I live, or at least in Canada is a big advantage; frivolous cases are reduced, too, as the loser pays the winner's court costs if it gets to court, unlike the USA). #4 Good track-record, and commitment to the industry (i.e kind of goes with #3, but also means they are not in 30 other businesses, and might dump their registrar business at some point). #5 Decent telephone support. #6 Good Command of the English language (I wouldn't go with Korean, Chinese, Indian registrars). #8 Easy to use web-based interface to make changes (while still maintaining good security), and facilitate transfers. I only had 8 points. :) Sincerely, George Kirikos http://www.kirikos.com/
