Of course, at this time, when it is possible to register a name for a period of up to 10 years, can we really be that sympathetic to people that let registrations lapse?

I am most definitely NOT sympathetic to people who let their domain registrations expire and drop.

As an RSP, though, I need to be sure that I can provide my clients with the service they expect, want, and need.

I currently have SOME way to get the domain back to the client (whether it's straight renewal or RGP) if they realize within ~60 days.

If a client's domain expires and Tucows starts to auction it off before the client is aware that the domain has expired, but I can't stop the auction and renew, then we've made a step backward with regard to customer satisfaction.

Likewise, as one bidding on others' names in the secondary auctions, I want to know that my purchase is free and clear of any encumbrances and that I'm not going to get nasty calls and emails (or even UDRP and lawsuit actions) from a prior owner who had his domain sold out from under him.
