Well then can you comment on how Tucows' proposed expired domain name
auction system (re: Tucows to Launch Auction Service for Expiring Domain
Names) can possibly honor the redemption grace period? In other words, to
enter redemption grace period, a domain name must be deleted by the current
registrar. Once deleted, how can control revert back to that registrar
after the redemption grace period expires to allow sale by auction?

Back on January 3 James Woods said we'd get some guidance later in January on the "upcoming" availability of the expiring names service.

I stopped holding my breath when I read that... seems like it's yet another OpenSRS feature/service that won't see the light of day till well after it's expected release.

Pity too, nice names expire and/or drop every day and the Snap/NetSol, Dotster, and Pool folks are making good $$ at it.
