This is excessively easy. Just download ubuntu or fedora, and boldly assume it will install perfectly on any hardware you have. Once in a while that's not true, but for the last 2-3 years, I've never once found an exception. It was 4-5 years ago and older, when there were all sorts of compatibility problems and difficulties. Do you want to talk about anything more specific? I have written down notes, of things I think should always be done during installation. I use these at work as the "install a new system" procedure. Things like ... After installing ubuntu, you should always go into synaptic and select the fastest mirror.
