There are two that I recommend: if you are just searching for files from the command line you can use the LOCATE command. Envoke "updatedb" to update the file index and then "locate filename" to get a list.
Alternately, google desktop makes an indexing software for ubuntu that will search file contents, much like Windows search or Mac's Spotlight.
