It probably is dead, but there is another possibility: Maybe your external enclosure is bad (or doesn't support 2T drives) and therefore causing the Mac to fail with the drive... (For that matter, you're not talking about a super ancient mac, are you?) And maybe your linux system has an old BIOS or kernel, which doesn't support 2T drives.
