Cloud computing is just the scalable externally hosted offering of any service which was traditionally hosted in-house. For example, backups, email, storage... Best and clearest example of cloud computing that I know of is ... Amazon, for example, running massively parallel compute jobs for some companies I work for, because the companies' needs are massively spiky. They need 1000 compute hours completed in the shortest possible time, and then they'll have no need for any compute hours for 3 weeks.
