Yes, there are a million of these "small" (but frustrating) differences between distributions. The general advice is usually to pick one and stick with it for a while. Once you get indoctrinated into a particular distro's way of doing things, the learning curve flattens out a bit. Trying to learn multiple distros at once before you're experienced with linux in general is probably too much for anyone who values their time. I'm very experienced with linux, and I /still/ hate switching distros...
