The confusion around this (I wasn't sure myself what exactly was needed to keep a 1 year expiration after the initial $100) makes me wonder if consumers are recognizing the value of this plan. If they aren't, then T-Mobile is failing to get any competitive benefit from offering it. For that matter, why do they even offer it?
