Clarification:
"offload the build process to the laptop" means people don't use VNC or anything else to
connect to servers remotely. They actually perform the build locally on their laptops. There are
lots of pros and cons of moving to laptop-centric workstations, hence "there are a lot of
reasons people might not want to do that."
Please note, I did not make the offload statement. But I tend to agree
with you here. A build that might take several hours is probably better
done on a server. VNC effectively gives you a console appearance.
Essentially what the OP wants to do is up to him. We've been using VNC
successfully for a while here, and it is better (IMHO) than Putty/Exceed.
