Agreed. Another tool that I have frequently used and always forget is sar(1).
The first issue is simple.
The second issue is how realtime do you want it. For just a daily report logwatch (you can set verbosity levels). A short bash script triggered by cron can give you email reports of various parameters, such as a sar(1) report, vmstat, and other command line tools.
