On further investigation, this has nothing to do with my eclipse client.
That is a separate issue.

This is caused by /usr/libexec/gnome-settings-daemon
--gconf-prefix=/apps/gdm/simple-greeter/settings-manager-plugins

I'm looking at some of the files in /etc/gdm, but I don't see anything
popping out yet. One site that I googled referenced using
/etc/gdm/custom.conf to shut off virtual terminals.

In my case I just commented out the ACTIVE_CONSOLES variable in 
/etc/sysconfig/init

But that does not solve the magic-cookie issue.
