I found a topic on support.mozilla.org about playing videos in an external
player that suggested disabling "media.windows-media-foundation.enabled" in
about:config.

That setting doesn't exist in the Linux version of firefox, but after
experimenting with a number of settings in about:config, I found that
disabling "media.gstreamer.enabled" fixed the problem.
