FreeNAS runs as an embedded OS. You don't install it; you dump the image to a USB flash drive and boot from that. Very simple to deploy, much pain to install security updates. PC-BSD and TrueOS are full installations like vanilla FreeBSD. More work to install, less hassle to update.
