i did indeed notice that, though not understanding why.

yes, and somewhere i recollect having run into this before
but now can find no reference to it.

i did this too and indeed it did work, but my perusing
"learning the bash shell" (fish) did not lead me to this or
the double brackets.  clearly i have missed something.
where was it?
