In the selection for which file-type to use, would the following phrasing be useful. Docx is there - just not encouraged! If my understanding is correct, docx is an xml representation of the binary format, so saying .doc is a format for Word 97-2010 is correct.
The situation is more complex. There are at least 3 different DOCX versions: 2007 transitional, 2010 transitional and strict (which will arrive in 2013 or later). Users do not have the slightest idea of the complexities associated with standard formats.
