I honestly don't see how kernels are outdated. They are still very much
part of an operating system grated on windows and mac you don't notice
that they are there, but they are. Linux is the one where you will see a
fair bit of interaction with the kernel during boot up in the sense that
you get to choose which version of the kernel to load.
