PRESS RELEASE The City Hall of Vieira do Minho adopts Free Software (LibreOffice)
The City Hall of Vieira do Minho has definitively adopted the productivity software LibreOffice around its computing park. This productivity package includes Writer, word processing and editing of web pages, Calc (Spreadsheet), creating and editing spreadsheets, Impress, creating and editing multimedia presentations, Draw, creating and editing drawings, diagrams and graphs , Base (Database), creating and editing Databases and Math (Equation Editor).
With this change to a Free Software, besides the lack of a financial burden due to the inexistence of licensing (Free Software), this City Hall has adopted open standards in accordance with Law 36/2011 of 21 June. It has also started the standardization and universality of digital formats in the files used by the City Hall and its residents.
This type of software enables the use of a variety of operating systems for use of various tools, it has been adopted internationally with very positive and encouraging results, it has the ability to import / export various proprietary formats (Word files, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, etc.) and establishes the native creation of PDF files. Other interesting feature of the software is to be fully in Portuguese and have writing tools also in Portuguese.
Regarding the management of employees ' electronic mail, the City Hall has adopted the Thunderbird program, also a Free Software. With this measure, the City Hall of Vieira do Minho aims to demonstrate that the definitive adoption of free software in many areas of public administration is not only desirable but also essential for a more modern and financially sustainable Public Service.
