You need to have been engaged on the community for the last three months
and want to participate the next 6 months

No, it's not mandatory. But you know the community is large and has a
lot of different sort of participation. To not miss one, we ask for some
references. But in your case, it seems I know you :) With no reference,
we have to search by ourselves, and it takes more time but it's done any
way, be sure of that.
