I suspect that many authors lack a complete understanding of
copyright. This is due - at least, in part - to the obtuse nature of
legal literature.

In this case, Creative Commons enables and empowers authors to become
well-informed by providing tools to clarify the broad monopoly
conferred them by copyright.

Our mandate must be to provide compelling reasons for authors to
choose free culture. We can do this most effectively with examples of
authors finding success (broadly defined) in the commons. There are a
couple very visible examples in Firefox and Wikipedia but we need
more.

Of course, should well-informed authors continue to choose restrictive
copyright schemes, we will need to regroup and strategize.
