Lawrence Lessig writes that he's giving his last Free Culture at
http://lessig.org/news/2008/01/final_free_culture_talk.html . It's at
Stanford from 1-2 pm on Thursday, January 31.
(I put "last" in scare-quotes because, as I recall, about four years ago
at Swarthmore he said he was giving his last or nearly-last such talk.
But the big production around this one probably means he's serious.)
If memory serves, this talk was given at Swarthmore at the founding of a
student movement called "FreeCulture.org" (now with a new name but the
same rich buttery flavor). Presumably this will be like that, only filmed
and with big screens behind Larry, and in Larry's home court, Stanford.
It's like getting a taste of history served by a chef with years more
experience and paying more attention to detail this time around. Plus
when your kids read about Lessig, you can show them this video and point
out your head in the audience.
If anyone wants to use that as an excuse to come hang out in San
Francisco, I'll be here and you can crash on my couch. (And I have to
say, Virgin America is both cheap and great if you want to fly.) And if
you're already in the Bay Area, then I can probably give you (or
organize) a ride there.
I'd be honored to organize an ad-hoc Students for Free Culture meetup in
SF that weekend if enough people respond.
(Yes, this is worth skipping your classes that day for.)
-- Asheesh.
P.S. Some of you have remarked to me that these Free Culture talks aren't
the be-all, end-all of this movement. That's surely true - I suggest you
(you know who you are) take this chance to see these talks off once and
for all!
