To note, FreeCultureNews.org is already taken (and doesn't seem to have any author information). You might be better off using a cleverer .org domain.

Likewise, if FreeCulture.net ever becomes a free culture social networking site, up-to-date free culture news could be a great draw to use it.

"Private" is confusing when used in conjunction with non-profit as non-profit is necessarily an organization with no private equity. That is, you cannot "own" a non-profit like you can own a private company.

On the other hand, if by private you mean "closed to outsiders participating" then you might have a point, at least with respect to ORG, but I don't know enough about how they work to make a judgement.

Nevertheless, your point not generalize as there are many member driven organizations with non profit status.

It should also be known that SFC is currently tracking towards non- profit status.

While it is not obviously not the right choice for everyone (see: Debian, etc.) non-profit status is a useful and valuable way to help grass roots organizations establish themselves as sustainable ventures.

Anyway, I'm in favor of a Free Culture News site if you guys can keep it up! Blogs take constant care & attention and I'm always happy to see more survive.

ORG is yet another self-perpetuating private non-profit company.
Good people and doing good things, but hardly grass-roots IMO.
The UK still needs more member driven FC like organisations.
