I agree absolutely. One of the most disorienting movie experiences is to watch a movie with subtitles in the same language as the movie. It gets hard to pay attention to either the subtitles or the sound track. News crawls cause this kind of interference as well. If you're going to interleave commentary, it works better after the fact. Certainly it would be more effective to mash up the commentary with the original than to have a bunch of talking heads saying things like, "His comments about yade-yade were in contradiction to widespread opinion that ..."
