Keep in mind that most of these "web services" are not made of magic pixie
dust, but instead of software. So even if Reddit doesn't comply with the
Franklin Street Statement
<http://autonomo.us/2008/07/franklin-street-statement/>, it can still be
open source or Free Software.

CPAL 1.0, the license Reddit uses, is a Free Software license according to
the FSF <http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/license-list.html>. (Most open
source licenses are Free Software licenses, too, as I found at
http://www.asheesh.org/note/software/osi-vs-fsf.html (summarized at
http://www.asheesh.org/note/software/osi-vs-fsf-summary.html ).)

I'm not sure Google actually runs Apache anywhere, honestly.

Any Googlers on the list might want to correct that, or not.

Me, too.

I've never been canoeing before, but I imagine there must be just a few
simple heuristics you have to remember...

Yes, don't fall out, and don't hit rocks.
