I just spotted this: (http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2011/03/zediva/) on the blagotubes. TL;DR: this company has a farm full of dvd machines. When you want to stream a video, they physically play the DVD in their farm, using your computer as a remote control, and send the video stream over the ether to you. They claim this is the same as rental.
