Subject: [FC-discuss] Email template for document freedom day

Hi everyone,

Below is a copy of an email I sent around to all the grad students in
my department about Document Freedom Day. I also fwd'd it to a dept
head who is already working on OA issues.

Feel free to copy it, modify it, and send it to your classmates,
faculty, coworkers, and colleagues!

Kevin

Subject: Today is Document Freedom Day!

Hi everyone,

Just a quick email to tell you about Document Freedom Day (DFD) - the
global day for document liberation!

Have you ever been frustrated because .docx files won't open right in
last year's version of Office? Remember when some people had Works,
others had Excel, and still others used Lotus 1-2-3?

Will you be able to open your dissertation files in 2 years? 10 years? 20 years?

Proprietary document formats like .doc, .docx, and .xls lock us into
specific software vendors, creating an unhealthy monopoly. Not only is
this inconvenient, it endangers future scholarship and threatens to
leave us with an incomprehensible digital mess where our archives
should be.

Fortunately, you don't need to change software to change course for a
more open future.

Open Document Formats are already implemented in Microsoft Office,
Open Office, Tables (not Pages), TextEdit, and Google Docs. Click
"Save as..." and look for the ODF or ODT option! Whenever possible,
save your notes as plain old .txt!

Want to spread the word? Use the #dfd2011 hashtag on twitter!

Kevin

PS. Isn't it weird that so many academic journals use proprietary
document formats? Let's change that, too.
