Hey Thomas and everyone,

at the moment I know of 3 usable / aim-to-be-usable free & open-source
online backup services. They are both still in development though but
highly active at that:

* SparkleShare http://sparkleshare.org (GPLv3) which uses git for
synchronization. You need a git server (Gitorious, GitHub, own server)
then you will have a folder SparkleShare and everything will feel like
Dropbox – web interface depends on the server.

* Syncany http://syncany.org (GPLv3) is in very early and very active
development, you can choose storage providers (S3, Rackspace, via WebDAV
etc.). Everything is client-side encrypted (=not usable from the server)
so it’s basically an alternative to iCloud. Gnome’s Deja Dup is somehow
similar.

* ownCloud http://ownCloud.org (AGPLv3, Disclaimer: I’m a contributor.) At
the moment it is a web interface similar to Dropbox & offers WebDAV
access. Desktop synchronization, sharing, versioning, encryption, Android
& webOS app etc. are in very active development. It aims to be a
replacement for Dropbox & iCloud / MobileMe (with online apps such as
calendar, contacts). In conjunction with localhost, LAMP &
http://pagekite.net it becomes easier to roll your own server.
Feel free to try it out on my server at http://libreprojects.net/owncloud
- credentials: admin/password or user/password.

Ubuntu One is only available for Ubuntu + the server side is proprietary =
not much better than Dropbox.

By the way, I added scalable.vg to the directory at
http://libreprojects.net/#graphics
Awesome would be an option to make your SVG public so that you can have a
gallery of some sort. And at that maybe have an option to add a free
Creative Commons license to it.
