UMass is throwing together a pretty big Open Access week. Its a University-wide event and the Library is a huge supporter, as well as the Comm department and UMass Free Culture (!!!). We've got Patricia Aufderheide giving the keynote.
Also I'll be doing a presentation on using Wikipedia as an open access teaching medium, as well as talking about creation of open access teaching materials (we've got a couple of University grants for profs who create open access teaching materials). I know Princeton is going to make big waves here - UMass is a big supporter of open access, and this might help convince some holdouts to move forward with more plans. That being said, University IP lawyers can be timid (which I suspect is why Princeton has such strange wording regarding their rules and licensing) - I've heard talk of trying to implement some alternative licensing for work that isn't strict CC-BY-SA or NC, to give the University (or "trustees" in this case) more wiggle room/rights. As for Open Access Week, If anyone wants to come down to hang out, hit me up (the keynote is the 24th, my talk is on the 26th and possibly another on the 28th). best Zach ______________________________ Zachary McDowell Doctoral Candidate Department of Communication University of Massachusetts Amherst Fall 2011 Wikipedia Teaching Fellow
