Alex,

This is great - I've been thinking about this for some time, and have
talked with many academics about how to make this more feasible (regarding
things like tenure promotion and such, which is very scary for burgeoning
academics). We are much further along in the process, but many are quite
afraid of OA journals and OA publishing. For example, we need more people
to volunteer for OA journals (since we - I say we because I am an editor of
communication +1 - don't have money to hire editors) so that our journals
can compete with the pay ones.

We also need more institutional support - my current PhD program offers
free CC licensing for theses, but at ASU they wanted $700 to copyright my
MA thesis with a CC-BY license. I didn't have $700, so my thesis was
"locked" because the option wasn't there (this was about six years ago,
they might have changed things since then, but I specifically remember
being very irked by this).

Kudos to you for putting this great site together. This is a touchy subject
for academics, and hopefully will get more conversation started.

best

Zach
