Possibly. But this will be because it's how they are steered by their device vendors. Cloud outages are not convenient, being spied on automatically and keeping sensitive information online isn't safe, and increased bandwidth usage isn't necessarily more efficient.

The software is free as in freedom, but the hardware is not.

I'm not unsympathetic to this argument, I've tracked "Open Hardware", "Free Networks" and IT coops for years. But the perfect is the enemy of the good in this instance. We have to start somewhere.

Let's do the best with what we've got.
