July 4 is a good time to reconsider not only the origins, text and meaning of 
the Declaration of Independence, but its 
history and context, over time.  Read in order, the original, and subsequent 
commentary allow consideration of perspective.  
The closing paragraphs of Douglass's speech could have been written today.
