I'm very sorry, it is not true that background will trigger layout. Please read the following regarding "layout" in IE: http://www.satzansatz.de/cssd/onhavinglayout.html The distorted fonts bug is related to the alpha filter applied to an element with bold font. The only known fix by now is to apply a background color to the element that has the filter.
