Thanks, John! Right on target, except it needed the second argument:  
text.substr(0,1).toLowerCase()

Also had to deal with the possibility of the first paragraph starting  
with some sort of tag, like so: <p><strong>hello</strong></p>
It was trying to turn the "<" into a drop-cap image. For now, I just  
added as a condition that the first letter couldn't be "<", so those  
pages won't get the drop cap.
